I've just returned from a serious jazz concert at Koerner hall, featuring the likes of Joe Levano and Esperanza Spalding. It gave me further proof that two drummers can form the backbone for incredible rhythm section possibilities. It makes perfect sense, as drum circles and tribal rhythms combine many people beating things to create intricate layers of timing and texture. Why wouldn't those concepts mesh just as well in a rock setting? So long as they are wiling to work in cooperation, and with restraint, the potential for epic and complex rhythms far outweighs the drawback of less spotlight. The Joe Levano Us Five band is definitely jazz and not rock, but their demonstration made it even more clear to me that I want to be a part of something that big.
